Sustainability Engineer

Position Summary:

Royal Caribbean Group are seeking a motivated Sustainability Engineer to act as our secondee at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping in Copenhagen for an initial period of 2 years. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to pioneering research and development projects aimed at reducing the maritime industry's carbon footprint. The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, industry stakeholders, and academia to advance sustainable shipping solutions aligned with Royal Caribbean’s sustainability goals. Depending on project outcomes and candidate interests, there may be opportunities for relocation to another Royal Caribbean location. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Technology Development 

  • Contribute to feasibility, development or pilot studies for emerging decarbonization technologies, such as onboard emissions reduction systems, alternative power sources, and innovative ship designs. 
  • Manage multidisciplinary project workstreams from concept to impactful deliverables. 
  • Communicate complex technological insights effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Propose structured plans for collaborative projects, including ideation, feasibility assessments, and implementation pathways. 
  • Support the integration of technological solutions into existing ship designs and maritime operations. 

 

2. Energy and Fuel Lifecycle Analysis 

  • Assess and analyse the lifecycle, certification standards, and regulatory challenges related to alternative fuels (e.g., ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels). 
  • Collaborate with fuel producers, regulators, and shipping companies to address bottlenecks in fuel supply chains and bunkering practices. 
  • Provide expert insights on fuel production processes, chain of custody, blending, and compliance requirements. 
  • Contribute to the development of certification standards and contribute to policy discussions related to sustainable fuels. 

 

3. Transition Analytics and Insights 

  • Develop, enhance, and utilize simulation and modelling tools to analyse energy transition scenarios for maritime shipping. 
  • Collaborate with the Transition Analytics and Insights (TAI) team to improve open-source analytical platforms such as NavigaTE. 
  • Translate complex data and modelling outputs into actionable insights for strategic decision-making. 
  • Support training and capacity-building efforts related to maritime energy transition modelling. 
  • Foster a collaborative environment by providing user feedback and supporting tool development. 

 

General responsibilities across all focus areas: 

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to drive innovation and sustainable solutions. 
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and technical papers for both internal and external audiences. 
  • Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory developments, and technological advancements in shipping decarbonization. 
  • Maintain a proactive approach to identify new opportunities and challenges within your focus area. 

 

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Systems, Environmental Science, or a related technical field. 
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in the maritime, energy, or technology sectors, or comparable sustainability roles. 
  • Depending on focus area: 
  • Experience with lifecycle analysis, fuel certification standards and/or fuel supply chains 
  • Experience with energy transition modelling 
  • Familiarity with maritime industry regulations, engineering practice, or decarbonization technologies. 
  • Proven track record in managing and delivering cross-disciplinary projects. 
  • Prior experience working in research environments, industry R&D projects, or consultancy is advantageous. 
  • Prior experience in the Maritime or adjacent sector experience is advantageous. 

 

Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Strong understanding of maritime design, shipping operations, or energy systems relevant to decarbonization efforts. 
  • Ability to analyse complex data sets, develop simulation models, or assess lifecycle impacts of alternative fuels. 
  • Skilled in planning, executing, and monitoring multidisciplinary projects with attention to detail. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; ability to tailor messages for technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative mindset; comfortable engaging with internal teams, industry stakeholders, and policymakers. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences. 
  • Proactive, self-driven, and capable of working independently as well as in team settings. 
  • Creative thinker with a can-do attitude, capable of proposing and implementing innovative solutions. 
  • Familiarity with analytical and modelling tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R, lifecycle assessment software) is a plus. 
  • Passionate about maritime or transport sector sustainability, and the clean energy transition.
