Position Overview 

Royal Caribbean Group is seeking a Director of Operational Energy Efficiency Performance to lead fleet-wide efforts in optimising energy efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and minimising emissions. This role will leverage advanced digital platforms, data analytics, and operational best practices to drive improvements in voyage planning, hull and propulsion performance, service power management, and specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC). The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker and technical expert who can collaborate across shipboard and shoreside teams to advance Royal Caribbean’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Fleet Energy Efficiency & Performance Optimisation 

  • Develop and implement energy efficiency strategies to optimise fuel consumption across Royal Caribbean Group’s global fleet. 
  • Royal Caribbean’s advanced digital platforms, including AI-driven analytics and performance monitoring tools, to enhance vessel and voyage efficiency.  
  • Track fleet-wide energy performance KPIs, ensuring alignment with company sustainability goals, ISO 50001 certifications and regulatory requirements (IMO CII, EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime). 

Voyage & Vessel Optimisation 

  • Collaborate with marine and technical operations teams to optimise voyage planning, speed profiles, weather routing, and trim optimisation. 
  • Improve hull and propulsion performance, working with shipboard teams to manage biofouling, hull coatings, and propeller efficiency. 
  • Lead SFOC optimisation initiatives, working closely with engineering teams to enhance engine efficiency and fuel management. 

Service Power & Hotel Load Efficiency 

  • Develop strategies to optimise hotel load management, including HVAC, lighting, and other high-energy-consuming systems across Royal Caribbean’s fleet. 
  • Partner with hotel and marine operations and decarbonisation teams to integrate energy-saving technologies and best practices. 
  • Monitor and improve onboard energy efficiency without compromising guest experience. 

Technology & Digitalisation 

  • Leverage Royal Caribbean’s digital twin and performance monitoring systems to drive continuous improvement in energy efficiency. 
  • Work with IT and data science teams to enhance energy optimisation algorithms and predictive analytics. 
  • Assist the Digital teams to develop fleet-wide reporting mechanisms, dashboards, and analytics tools to enable data-driven decision-making. 

Cross-Functional Leadership & Collaboration 

  • Work closely with shipboard leadership, marine operations, hotel operations, and sustainability teams to foster a culture of energy efficiency. 
  • Provide training and awareness programs to ensure shipboard teams are equipped with the knowledge and tools to drive fuel savings. 
  • Collaborate with newbuild and ship design teams to integrate energy-efficient technologies into future vessel designs. 

 

Qualifications & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in maritime operations, vessel performance optimisation, or energy efficiency. 
  • Strong understanding of voyage planning, propulsion performance, hull efficiency, and onboard energy systems. 
  • Experience working with vessel performance monitoring tools, AI-driven analytics, and digital platforms. 
  • Knowledge of international maritime regulations and industry best practices related to fuel efficiency and emissions reduction (IMO CII, FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS). 
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience managing cross-functional teams.  
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Maritime Operations, Sustainability, or a related field. 
  • Experience in the cruise industry, preferably with a focus on large passenger vessel operations. 
  • Familiarity with alternative fuels, energy storage systems, and emerging decarbonisation technologies. 

Physical Demands:

 

While performing job functions the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch and crawl.  Additionally the employee is required to write, review and type reports, compile data, operate a pc, communicate, listen, and assess information.  The employee may move about the office complex, work aboard ships and may travel to other office locations.  Able to lift, push, pull or move 10-15 pounds and occasionally 25 pounds.  The employee is required to walk to the dock, ascend and descend the vessel.  This position regularly travels domestically and internationally.  Visual requirements include distant, close and colour vision, and ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment:

 

The environment includes work inside/outside the office, travel to other offices, as well as domestic, international, and shipboard travel.  A high noise level is possible if visiting shipboard or offsite locations.  Ability to travel an estimated 60% of the time.  This position requires the ability to work in both an office and marine (ship) environment. As mentioned before, this position requires an office space where private conversations can take place in order to protect the confidentiality of our patients.
