Sr Mgr, Medical Ops & Public Health

Position Summary:

 

A licensed medical doctor with ample experience in shipboard maritime medicine who will be responsible to provide medical support to the operation of the designated medical teams, as well as liaise and engage with senior level colleagues in hotel and maritime operations, local and regional government officials, and leaders of other external organizations, as needed. The support to the shipboard medical teams includes but is not limited to providing guidance to the doctors on the ships via emails, phone calls and coverage of the help line. This position does not make clinical decisions on the treatment of patients at any time or under any circumstances. Shoreside doctors provide guidance and leadership to the shipboard doctors. The final decision on the treatment of any patient, including the need to evacuate a patient relies on the ship’s doctor(s).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide medical advisory services to shipboard doctors across all Royal Caribbean Group brands.

Provide guidance to the shipboard doctors on the disembarkation of patients such as the pertinence to proceed with a shoreside referral, end of contract referral or medical sign off.

Provide guidance to the shipboard doctors on the procedures to evacuate a person from a ship.

Guide shipboard doctors on the procedures to sign off a crew member and provide medical end of contract referrals.

Provide advice and/or guidance on differential diagnoses, coordination of care, and care/treatment support, as needed (shoreside doctors do not make direct patient care decisions).

Participate in the review process of surgical treatments for crew members, ensuring appropriate clinical documentation and explanation of need for the requested surgical procedure.

Support crew wellness programs.

Provide regular, periodic on-call coverage for the helpline in support of the shipboard medical teams.

Provide medical consultation and guidance, with the shoreside Public Health team, to shipboard medical teams for onboard crew infectious diseases cases and outbreaks.

Support and facilitate, as needed, shipboard infectious disease vaccination programs, including influenza and SARS-CoV-2, as needed.

Review pre-employment/re-employment physicals of new/returning crew, as needed.

Deploy to ships in situations of illness outbreaks or emergency coverage needs (must maintain credentials to work onboard).

Provide medical consultation and support for onboard crew infectious diseases outbreaks and individual cases of infection, such as chicken pox, measles or tuberculosis.

Support Crew Medical and Risk Management teams to ensure effective review and management of medical cases.

Support and provide, as needed, medical team training and education.

Provide input on the performance evaluations of shipboard medical.

Perform other duties as required.

Serve as primary liaison with Health Authorities and engage with other government officials, as needed to support and advance RCG’s success.

Travel with Public Health Authorities for ship inspections, as needed.

Support recruitment of doctors and nurses.

Assess capabilities of and establish relationships with medical facilities in relevant Asian ports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

'- Licensed Medical Doctor

- Experience as a shipboard Senior Doctor for at least 5 years is preferred.

- Ten (10) years, minimum, of experience as a medical practitioner.

- Familiarity and comfort with data collection, review and analysis.

-Understanding of performance and outcomes measures and their application to driving improved performance and quality.

- Ability to travel to ships to provide onsite support and management, as needed.

- Fluent in English and Mandarin

- Skilled in word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software


Physical Demands:

While performing job functions the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, kneel, crouch and crawl.  Additionally the employee is required to write, review and type reports, compile data, operate a pc, communicate, listen, and assess information.  The employee may move about the office complex, work aboard ships and may travel to other office locations.  Able to lift, push, pull or move 10-15 pounds and occasionally 25 pounds.  The employee is required to walk to the dock, ascend and descend the vessel.  This position regularly travels domestically and internationally.  Visual requirements include distant, close and color vision, and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:

 

The environment includes work inside/outside the office, travel to other offices, as well as domestic, international, and shipboard travel.  A high noise level is possible if visiting shipboard or offsite locations.  Ability to travel an estimated 60% of the time.  This position requires the ability to work in both an office and marine (ship) environment. As mentioned before, this position requires an office space where private conversations can take place in order to protect the confidentiality of our patients.
