If you are, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, is seeking the Principal Architect to lead the architecture of the B2C e Commerce platform for improving booking revenue using cutting edge eCommerce platforms. This is a key role in the Enterprise Architecture organization leading a team of passionate architects that is focused on architecting and designing solutions related to improving next generation vacations. This Leader and the team will collaborate closely with product, engineering, domain architects, and other cross-functional teams to deliver the cutting-edge eCommerce product to the market. The ideal candidate has a knack for staying on top of advancements in web commerce and content management technology and can apply new practices and technology strategically and incrementally. She/He will have influence in instilling development best practices that enable the agile release of high performing and scalable functionality in support of the eCommerce business and the many product managers and producers. The cruise (and travel) industry is a complex one – to be successful in this role, this leader will have a deep understanding and hands-on experience with cruise industry reservation systems. This position must be able to navigate the technical environment surrounding marketing, as they will serve as architect and advisor to the global ecommerce team in optimizing their use of the eCommerce product suite to successfully evaluate and grow the capabilities of the team and deliver high quality, high performing solutions, faster.



eCommerce Architecture Strategy

Accountable for leading, developing, and managing the vision, and delivery of eCommerce capability for the B2C domain. This includes domain models, principles, current-state and targetstate architectures, and roadmaps. The B2C technology domain capabilities include cutting edge web, mobile front-ends, API based integrations, next-gen payment capabilities, chat bot-oriented customer servicing, SEO, Content management components. The strategy should lead into optimization of sales funnel, maximizing the key experience scores, and conversion rates.


eCommerce Platform Architecture

Responsible for defining the incremental state architectures, design patterns, and best practices that align with the Enterprise Architecture standards. Takes lead in refining, refactoring and maintaining platform architecture capabilities as it evolves. Provide architectural and big-picture oversight for development of client implementations on the Commerce Cloud platform for global programs


eCommerce Technology Standards and Design Patterns Provide technology and architectural assessments and recommendations on the design of ecommerce systems, ensuring architectural integrity of the system. Provide feasibility analysis and execute POC’s for de-risking architecturally significant components, vendor assessment and third-party integrations.


Overall Responsibilities

Define eCommerce product architectures and align /Product architecture with product vision & strategy. The responsibility is across domains including Cruise reservation, air reservation, vacation pricing, pricing recommendation, loyalty and omnichannel.


Demonstrate hands on strong technical leadership and people coaching skills including excellent communication. Coach, mentor, and lead a group of motivated, architects.


Ensures Product architectures aligns with enterprise architecture, design, and technology principles and best practices.


Innovates and integrates new technology. Identifies the trade-off between the cost of change and the benefits and recommends accordingly.


Proactively learns new emerging technology products and solutions for tackling challenging problems across core domains including Cruise Reservations, Direct Sales.


Contributes to the Enterprise Architecture standards by collaborating with Product Engineering and Domain Architects. Manages ARB outcomes and action items and follows up on converging technical debts to architecture standards.


Communicate effectively both within and across cross-functional teams and IT leadership. Ensure team receives consistent messages and has clear understanding of product direction, vision, strategy, and outcomes.


Works across Royal Caribbean value streams and programs to deliver the strategic architectural direction.


Plan and manage budgets related to scope of team in partnership with Foundational Architecture and aligned with Product Manager


Work with product owners, managers and directors across the Enterprise domains to understand market needs & vision.


Promotes reuse and adoption of common and shared standards by eliminating duplication. Proactively work with product manager to identify architectural solution blueprints needed for solution build, manage the commitment and timeline Drive the creation and validation of non-functional requirements concerning items such as consistency, performance, security, resiliency etc.


These are especially critical in complex business scenarios Own solution blueprints that provide end-end architecture for the key pieces of the solution.


In this regard, they not only maintain the blueprint but are also responsible for working towards making vendor recommendations, providing candidate solutions, and allowing the adoption of the best solution that will meet the program needs but also be aligned with the overall enterprise goals.

Lead review of design and assessing the feasibility of implementation and recommending options, constraints, and alternatives to product team especially when complex requirements are prohibited from implementation due to existing constraints.


Liaison with other architects to understand the integration scenarios and provide solutions to the cross-program blueprint level dependency analysis.


Responsible for reviewing the proposed solution blueprints with Engineering Lead and Product Manager prior to implementation.


Leads creating the review material for presentation to architecture review board (ARB) where required and get closure on the solution path to be undertaken for implementation.


Leads PoC’s where necessary to prove solution direction in coordination with product and engineering lead around resource capacity and priority



Bachelor’s or Masters in Computer Science/Engineering or related disciplines



Minimum of 10 years of experience with any of the major eCommerce platforms including SAP Hybris, Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, IBM WebSphere, Spryker, and conversational Chat bots.

10+ years of progressive experience with architecture leadership roles in defining highly scalable, performant, and resilient eCommerce Platform architectures

Hands on experience with full stack architecture ranging from Mobile/Web to Microservices, to API Management to Distributed computing applications to Data architecture to cloud infrastructure architecture.

Experience with Customer journey mapping, user experience, and design thinking are a plus.

Minimum of 5+ years’ experience with Content management products like AEM, Wordpress, Joomla,, Contentful.

Leverages critical thinking skills and disciplined approaches to help peers and IT leadership teams to resolve issues and define solutions. Hands on experience with using EA tools like Sparx EA, Archimate.

Demonstrated knowledge of developing architecture artifacts using TOGAF/DODAF standards. UML modeling artifacts such as context diagram, Use Cases, Domain model, sequence diagrams, deployment diagrams, BPMN, data modeling.

5+ years hands on experience with Reservations, Call Center, Accounting and B2B APIs and in addition to Mobile, Web and Hybrid architectures across iOS, Android, and JS frameworks including Angular, Backbone, etc.

Broad experience with Distributed computing, databases, different type of Cloud models such as IAAS, PAAS, FAAS, SAAS as well Cloud Solution Providers like AWS, Azure, Pivotol and Google Compute Engine, and Distributed Databases like Couchbase, Realm, MongoDB, Cassandra, Spanner, Dynamo DB, and relational DBs like Oracle, SQL Server.

Experience with Container architectures including Mesosphere, Kubernetes and data virtualization/orchestration platform like PortWorx. Strong experience with different Security architecture standards including OWASP, oAuth, Identity & Entitlement Management, SSL, Tokenization, and Encryption standards.

Exposure to regulatory and compliance like SOXX, PCI, and GDPR.

5+ years’ experience with architecting Domain-Driven Design (DDD) approach for delivering Cloud native applications using Spring frameworks, Cloud Foundry, Docker/Kubernetes/Mesosphere environments.

Working knowledge of Agile methodologies and tools like Scrum, and SAFe.

Strong leadership and communications skills including teamwork, facilitation, and coordination to ensure successful creation of product architectures by aligning with Enterprise Architecture governance, domain reference architectures.

Working knowledge of AI/ML eco systems including Microsoft Azure, Databricks, IBM Watson, Google TensorFlow, AWS SageMaker and Conversational Chatbots.
