Superintendent, Life Saving Appliance (LSA) Safety


Reports to Manager of Technical Systems & Safety and assist with overseeing the condition and initiatives related to fire safety and Life Saving Appliance (LSA) systems, including but not limited to firefighting systems, lifeboats, davits, maintenance, monitoring of such systems, and SQM policies within GMTS area of responsibility. Areas of concern can range from all machinery in Engine spaces, to equipment in accommodation areas affecting the fire safety of the ship or LSA. Actively initiate, plan, coordinate and drive activities of ongoing upgrades, enhancements, and maintenance to existing systems, to ensure they are accomplished within prescribed time frame and budget. Coordinates activities with shipboard installation teams to ensure project progresses on schedule, accurately reflects current project status through regular updates of tasks and statuses. Communicate project plan status to shoreside team/executive leadership on a regular basis.



  • Supports the Marine Operations Ship Managers and Superintendent(s) of all Brands on all Fire Safety and LSA related matters.
  • Stays current with technical research and projects development related Fire Safety and evaluate new technology for use across the fleet. Run test programs on new equipment in conjunction with ship personnel as directed.
  • Stays current on SQM policy related to Fire Safety and LSA and is responsible for the timely corrections of audit findings as assigned.
  • Perform inspections, validate maintenance of life saving appliances (winches, davits, lifeboats) and conduct pre-dry dock budgetary planning of LSA work required to be complete in next scheduled dry dock.
  • Work together with ship officers, crews, and surveyors during the life savings appliances inspection/maintenance.
  • Developing quality detailed reports for clients and management.
  • Manages the technical projects as assigned and related riding teams.  
  • Establish budgets, work plans, procedures, responsibilities, goals, scope, outline milestones and tracking routines for completing the projects. 
  • Coordinates activities to ensure project progresses on schedule, accurately reflects current project status through regular updates of tasks and statuses. 
  • Establishes, monitors, and updates the Manager Technical Systems, as well as the Finance team of changes, additions or reductions to CAR projects assigned to the installation or technical projects onboard specific vessels. 
  • Proactively interface with representatives of different departments within the company, for the purpose of project status and monitoring progress. 
  • Reviews status reports prepared by project personnel, modify schedules or plans as required. Serves as single point of contact for collecting and sharing requested information. 
  • Participate in Dry-Dock meetings as needed/assigned.

  • Assists in the preparation and review of operating budgets related to aforementioned systems. 
  • Monitors and updates the Manager Technical Systems and Safety, as well as the Marine Finance team of changes, additions, or reductions to assigned CAR projects.
  • Assist in CAR process for various projects ranging $10 million in spend specific to the discipline and related to new initiatives, upgrades to existing equipment and replacement of operating systems. 
  • Always look for efficiency within each individual installation to show savings in energy and maintenance costs.



  • Must possess a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering from an accredited institution. 
  • Experience: 5-7 years within the Marine Shipping Industry, Passenger Cruise industry preferred. 
  • Chief Engineers license preferred.
  • Experience in managing a team of traveling Engineers, as well as being able to properly communicate with Engineers onboard vessels. 
  • Have the ability to bring different groups together in order to form a cohesive team when working on projects.



  • Utilizes project management tools and techniques to develop and maintain project scope; manages customer expectations and maintains focus. 
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills must communicate at all levels of the organization. 
  • Knowledge of CAR process: budget, approval, reconciliation, and reporting, AMOS, Newbuild management tool and related systems. 
  • Proficient with vessel operations in order to apply projects and instructions to existing conditions. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects on multiple vessels; understand the importance of keeping many departments informed with policy or onboard changes.
