Specialist, Expedition Product Development

The Specialist of Expedition Product Development reports directly to the Sr Director of Expedition Product and Itinerary Development. The Specialist of Expedition Product Development plays a critical role in collaborating with the Sr Director in developing new, innovative, and improving existing product and itineraries. A unique and comprehensive geographic knowledge in the expedition cruise industry is critically important. Ideally have a nautical background or has a familiarity with nautical charts and voyage planning. Attention to detail and familiarity with accounting procedures is necessary to create and oversee the departments CAPEX budgets. Experience demonstrating a high-level of organizational skill is necessary to manage the volumes reports, disseminating information to the appropriate departments and individuals and creating an  organized archival system. Previous experience building PowerPoint presentations and project management experience is essential. Must be prepared to manage many different projects simultaneously and coordinate and collaborate with several different departments. Must be able to work autonomously prepared to travel approximately 30% per year.


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Collecting and reviewing volumous reports from the field, disseminate details and parts of the reports to various stakeholders. This includes follow-up on budget and timelines, developing schedules, and archiving in an organized and systematic structure. 
  • Oversees the management of the onboard CAPEX equipment. Creating schedules of replacement, tracking movement between vessels and is responsible for the 5-year plan of purchase and replacement for all expedition vessels.
  • Responsible for the process and submission of timely paperwork (e.g. CARS) to appropriate department for approvals.
  • Building PowerPoint presentations for senior management for various subjects, such as, but not limited to; proposed and innovative itineraries, equipment, new build and re-furbished vessels, departmental budget etc.
  • Oversees the responsibility of maintaining the highest standard of shipboard Expedition equipment, taking into consideration ongoing industry research and feedback by the Expedition Team members
  • Assisting with voyage planning and building technical itineraries by charting routes on charting software.
  • Responsible for determination of permitting requirements for new areas and collaborating with the Sr Manager Expedition Program and Experience to determine all requirements are fulfilled.
  • Be familiar with our Expedition Operations Manual (EOM) and contributing to content, as appropriate.
  • Ongoing research into new and innovative products and programing ideas to differentiate our product and program from the competition.
  • Developing innovative language programs.
  • Represent company at Regulatory meetings and industry membership organizations such as AECO, KMTA and IAATO.
  • Identify and disseminate any permitting requirements needed for any new itineraries to the appropriate stakeholder.
  • Collaboratively, with the Destination Experience Management team, develop and oversee, a yearly detailed scouting and destination development plan. 
  • In depth understanding and oversight of regulatory processes for permitting in various operating regions such as (but not limited too ) Antarctica, Svalbard, Greenland, Canadian Arctic, Russian Far East, Australia Kimberley, New Zealand sub-Antarctica, Indian Ocean ( Aldabra ) , Baha California and Galapagos.
  • Collaboration with Port Operations to ensure compliance with local regulations.
  • Perform other relevant duties as directed by supervisor.




  • BSc/BA in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality, Business Administration, Management or similar is desired


Years of experience:

  • Preferred 2 years of experience working with multinational Expedition Team
  • Preferred 5+ years of work experience onboard vessels operating worldwide


Essential qualifications and skills:

  • Must possess extensive destination knowledge
  • A strong understanding of expedition ship operations and operating regions.
  • Understanding of budget planning and financial control.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; professional demeanor.
  • Proficient with word-processing and spreadsheet software and presentations.
  • Must be highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of working with minimal direction.
  • Ability to set priorities, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and manage time effectively.
  • Solid expedition and cruise industry background.
  • Proactive and hands on attitude
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment
