Propulsion Systems Manager

Position Summary:

The Manager, Propulsion Systems position will provide overall technical support and expertise for propulsion systems for all brands. In addition, initiates, drives activities of ongoing upgrades, enhancements, standards, and maintenance of podded propulsion systems. This position will be required to prepare scopes for upcoming wet/dry docks together with brand ship managers, work on arranging POs for the project, manage suppliers and interface to the shipyards, follow up with accounting and assist in forecasting the projects financials.  This position requires you to attend dry/wet docks to manage planned or unplanned maintenance or projects for various propulsion related systems as assigned to ensure they are accomplished within prescribed time frame and budget. The manager will be expected to communicate project plan status to shoreside project team and project stakeholders on a regular basis. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain communications with Marine Operations to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and governing agencies on all safety, operational and environmental policies.
  • Ensures there is communication and approval from Flag state, DNV, or other government bodies for any changes to the construction or relevant equipment onboard. 
  • Participates in the creation of planning models that supports the organization's mission and values based on an internal and external needs assessment. 
  • Responsible for conducting pilot programs on such equipment together with ship's personnel to fulfill as directed by RCG Marine Operations senior management. 
  • Participates with senior management in the development of long-range planning and objectives. 
  • Prepares Capital projects to include drafting the capital memo for project content and technical accuracy along with a detailed capital project budget and acts as CAR manager to oversee successful execution of capital projects as they relate to lifecycle maintenance and technical upgrades to propulsion machinery.
  • Develop and update RCG Maintenance Strategy, including procedures, checklists, documentation, operational structure, monitoring, maintenance, and repair processes.
  • Oversee propulsion machinery performance KPI’s and manage fleet overview of asset maintenance and performance with RCG Marne Operations as directed by RCG senior management.
  • Develop Propulsion Systems reference library.
  • Closely work with RCG Marine Operations management, Superintendents, manufacturers, class and other resources to further develop the propulsion technology in order to improve reliability, maintenance and operational aspects.
  • Provide reports, evaluate data and recommend adjustments to 5-year maintenance plan.
  • Participate in preparation of repair scheduling and budgeting.
  • Researches, evaluates, and identifies new industry technology for use onboard RCG ships that are in line with departmental strategic plan.
  • Oversee all technically related incidents and ensure those are properly investigated, reported and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Participates with senior management in the development of long-range planning and objectives.

 

Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited college or university or the international equivalent preferred. Master of Science preferred. 
  • 10+ years background as Naval Architect or Marine/Mechanical Engineer preferred. 
  • Experience from a ship management organization, classification society or similar a plus.
  • Previous shipyard/dry-docking/major repair or conversion experience required.
  •  Working knowledge of steel structure, welding application, mechanical systems, electrical systems, machining, and other shipyard disciplines.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of DNV requirements/protocols, USCG, and Flag state regulations/requirements operating procedures as applied to company vessels.
  • Extensive knowledge of safe work practices in shipyard environments. 
  • Ability to manage the financial aspects of the assigned function, including the successful identification of expense reduction through cost efficiencies.
  • Ability to manage headcount within area.
  • Knowledge of policies and practices involved in the human resources function.
  • Ability to manage a staff in a positive and productive manner by motivating, developing and managing employees as they work.
  • Ability to utilize and administer the disciplinary action process through coaching and counseling to improve performance or terminate employment. 
  • Working knowledge of computers, Internet access, and the ability to navigate within a variety of software packages such as Microsoft (MS) Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Project, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, Lotus Notes, maintenance databases such as Amos.
