Royal Caribbean Group’s Safety, Security & Environment Team has an exciting career opportunity for a full time Mgr, Internal Safety Security Quality Environmental Audit sreporting to the Senior Director, Maritime Compliance
This position will work on-site in Miami, Florida.
Position Summary: (Ability to travel an estimated 60% of the time and to work in both an office and marine (ship)).
This role manages the internal audit program and a team of 8 internal auditors for the RCL fleet as required by the international regulations for safety management as well as compliance with the voluntary standards of ISO 9001, 14001 and 50001. The Manager sets future strategies for, develops, coordinates, and administers the internal audit programs, protocols, and auditor assignments. Develops SSQE audit scope and procedures, planning and ensuring pre-audit, audit conduct and post-audit activities occur in a timely manner for both shipboard and shore side SSQE (Security, Safety, Quality & Environment) audits. The Manager interfaces with internal stakeholders including shipboard and shoreside leadership and relevant Class Society representatives as needed to ensure the results of audits are properly addressed and the company maintains our document of compliance which allows us to continue operating our vessels.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages the internal and regulatory security, safety, environmental and quality audit administrative functions, including audit scheduling that meets regulatory timeframes, tracking, reviewing of audit reports.
- Serves as Senior Lead SSQE Auditor. For each audit, audit planning including scheduling, communications to ships / shore side departments, preparation of specific audit plans, development of verification schemes for previous findings. Lead, coordinate and conduct Shipboard and Shore side auditing activities which includes maintaining communications and dialogue with colleagues, shipboard and shore side, to ensure effective communication channels are open and filter communications to the critical issues in pre-audit, audit, and post audit timeframes.
- Manages and leads the revision of audit protocols, templates and other SSQE audit tools.
- Monitors team activities for presentation of audit process and results including production of audit reports with specified timeframes.
- Manages and reviews the content of training provided, shipboard and shore side, with regard to topics such as AIRTS (Accident/Incident Report Tracking System), SQM (Safety Quality Management), Corrective / Preventative Actions (Audit Outcomes to be executed), Management Systems elements, Job Safety Analysis, Work Permits, AMOS.
- Mentors, trains, and provides coaching and feedback to all SSQE auditing team members. Ensures that all SSQE Auditors receive training to perform their duties and are kept up to date with applicable rules, regulations, and maritime industry standards.
- Manages communication between SSQE Auditors and auditees. Works with shipboard and shore side personnel on compliance / continuous improvements, which includes clarification of audit results, explanation of audit findings where appropriate. Provides coaching to prepare effective corrective/preventative action statements for the operations and/or ship to take action on audit findings.
- Monitors SSQE Audit team to summarize the analysis and trend details of audit findings which are reported to the Executive shipboard committee (Captains, Hotel Director, HR Manager & Chief Engineer) and shore side departments.
- Develop and implement an annual corporate auditing strategy including the identification of audit focus areas. Evaluation /determination of compliance with applicable rules and regulations as set forth in regulations and ISO (International Standards Organization) standards.
- Evaluate current processes to identify areas for continuous improvement and ensuring relevance of the current audit process in combination with other leading and lagging indicators such as accident/incident data, Class Society and Flag inspections, industry standards and external audits.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in maritime related field or equivalent, or at least five years of directly related maritime auditing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Auditing (Lead Auditor) or Marine Technical License, Marine Surveyor or related certification preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of Corporate Safety and Quality Management System elements, applicable maritime rules, regulations, and standards.
- Has a broad depth and breadth of understanding and experience with Security, Safety, Quality and Environmental management systems Extensive knowledge of Management Systems and/or Management System standards to include, but not limited to, areas such as ISM (International Safety Management Code), ISPS (International Security Standards), ISO14001 (Environmental Standards), ISO9001 (Quality Standards) and other maritime regulations.
- Extensive knowledge of passenger shipboard technical and hotel operations preferred.
- Very strong English writing and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent diplomatic and interpersonal skills for effective communication and negotiation with all levels of management in a diverse environment to include shipboard and shore side corporate offices.
- Conflict resolution through the use of tact, diplomacy and candor as needed.
- Ability to effectively present information to all levels of management, crew and interested parties including regulators.
- Extensive knowledge of shore side marine or hotel operations preferred.
- Knowledge/experience in internal auditing techniques
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulations, management system standards, common scientific journals, and legal documents.
- Strong skills with regard to word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. The environment includes work inside/outside the office, travel to other offices, as well as domestic, international, and shipboard travel. A high noise level is possible if visiting shipboard or offsite locations. Ability to travel an estimated 60% of the time. This position requires the ability to work in both an office and marine (ship).
