Position Summary:
The Manager, Architectural Design brings leadership and expertise to various newbuild, revitalization and refurbishment projects. In collaboration with senior Design leadership, this candidate is responsible for overseeing and managing projects from conception to completion, ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
This candidate will provide guidance to a team of architects and designers for the successful execution of these projects and serve as a conduit of information and intelligence from the corporation and brand to external architects and design firms, ensuring the success of these groups. The Manager, Architectural Design reviews drawings/proposals to recommend decisions, provides innovative solutions and ideas, and ensures the design team is prepared for key start-ups and milestones.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures design intent is apparent and credible, and that the voice of the Executive Steering Committee and Brand is communicated clearly and consistently to all workstreams, both internal and external.
- Fosters an innovative, forward thinking, proactive, and collaborative environment as a role model that brings all disciplines together and creates favorable results. Shows a positive commitment to the learning & growth of oneself and others.
- Embraces the value of the design guidelines & standards, CADD & drawing standards, and contract references, taking the leadership that they are fulfilled within content of design drawings and specifications, and is ultimately accountable that the materials are delivered on a timely basis.
- Develops team resources (people, processes, tools) to manage large scale projects. Independently plans, manages, guides design, and oversees projects, while cross coordinating and sharing best practices effectively between external architectural, interior design and world-wide consultancy firms, guiding the design they provide.
- Upholds SQM practices throughout all design phases. Brings proactiveness in creating new methods and processes for better executing design work.
- Initiates and regularly attends meetings with sponsors as an active participant & obtains approval on design.
- Acts as liaison between various stakeholders and the Newbuilding department.
- Understands the business value of studies of statistical information. Analyzes and compares various ships and areas such as public vs. crew areas, outdoor decks vs. enclosed spaces, dining vs. entertainment spaces, etc., bringing forth observations, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Creates presentations and project reports for leadership and executive review.
- Possesses and instills cost consciousness in all aspects of the design process and throughout the team.
- Oversees, and is accountable for, cost complexity balancing, architectural & design fees, design administrative hours, expenses (travel, phones, supplies), and others. Oversees the cost control of signage, artwork, carpeting, and loose furnishings. Manages teams travel and expenses.
- Effectively leads practicality reviews and is held accountable to ensure that operational, risk or accessibility concerns are being considered in all aspects of design.
- Monitors the effectiveness of execution supervision and yard quality control with foresight in coordination with site offices. This includes shop drawing reviews, participation in yard / contractor coordination meetings, mockup reviews, factory visits and inspections during newbuilding process and drydock period.
- Understands importance of growth and maintaining brand / consultant / yard relationships with ability to negotiate critical and controversial issues, managing conflict effectively.
- Attracts, trains, grows, rewards, and retains diverse talent.
- Provides professional development of staff through mentoring, performance management, and career planning.
- Effectively communicates the department’s values and culture through words and actions.
- Initiates and participates in organization of office activities, and corporate activities.
- Stays current in industry trends and innovation through research and market knowledge.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Ten or more years of professional experience, professional degree in architecture from an accredited program, licensure preferred but not required.
- Bachelor of Architecture
- Minimum of 8 years of related design experience hospitality, Retail / Dining / Entertainment (RDE), theme park projects, as well as a minimum of 5 years of project management experience
- 8+ years of experience within cruise design industry preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years managing multi-million-dollar projects and managing high- performing teams.
- Proficient in use of AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit and familiarity with related tools and process
- Experience with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Bluebeam, Photoshop
- Must be able to lead a team on projects.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with strong ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management and employees, across diverse cultures around the world.

- Ability to travel internationally or domestically at least 25% of the time.
Financial Responsibilities:
- Management of multi-million-dollar projects in the range of $50 mil for revitalizations and $500 mil. for newbuilds.
