Lead Data Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY:

Based in Miami, FL or Raleigh, NC and reporting to the Manager, BI & Analytics, the Lead Data Engineer will move, organize, transform, automate and manage data to help support performance measurement and strategic analysis that will influence the priorities for RCG digital. Our department works with all areas of the business, so this role will cover a diverse set of topics and a broad array of technologies, from legacy to leading edge. Data is sourced and/or stored in cloud systems such as AWS, Azure and BigQuery, as well as using technologies like Couchbase, MySQL & Realm, and incorporates other legacy database systems such as Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, etc.  While the primary focus will be on the database systems and ETL processes, additional responsibilities will include BI reporting and Python API based application maintenance, as well as support of the team’s data analytics tools. This individual will work independently and is expected to approach assignments autonomously, coordinating business processes, programs and projects based on the strategies and defined directives, without constant direction. S/he will be responsible for interacting with various departments within Royal Caribbean to find, consolidate & manipulate data from multiple large data sets, as well as create reports, presentations and/or dashboards for the digital executive leadership team. This position will have access to the senior digital leadership team and will have a positive influence on the growth of current and future digital products for RCCL as well as a positive impact on both our Guest & employee experience.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform ETL processes to collect data from various sources, organize it in a central repository, provide automated data governance/transformations, and feed the data to external sources as automated reports and BI Dashboard outputs.
  • Design and implement complex Database procedures and processes against various production databases. Responsible for the maintenance and documentation of data structures.
  • Execute SQL queries against various production databases utilizing efficient data access methods and an in-depth understanding of the data structures being queried for decision support purposes.
  • Development and monitoring of data migration/transfer processes utilizing SQL Server, flat-file manipulation, FTP utilization, and Cloud Database and storage.
  • Designing, developing, and implementing integrations by analyzing and understanding user and business requirements. Develops data strategies specifically around data structures, identifying critical information, as well as the tools used to retrieve and analyze the data. Performs research and analysis on large data sets - data exploration, trending, modeling, etc. Determines the best design methodologies and toolsets needed for each project.
  • Meet deadlines/milestone markers by coordinating meetings, gathering the proper requirements, and completing daily development activities. Works autonomously and with little direction to complete assignments, coordinating business processes, programs and projects based on the outlined strategies and defined directives.
  • Troubleshoot development and production problems across multiple environments and operating platforms.
  • Influence business decisions through analytics and identifies actionable, data-driven insights. Makes recommendations and influences the direction of the business by effectively communicating results to a cross functional group as well as department executives.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Advanced understanding of Relational Database Management Systems
  • Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming, including languages such as Python and R
  • Working knowledge of one or more (ideally several) data platforms, including: MS SQL Server, Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, Oracle, Redshift, Couchbase.
  • Understanding of extraction tools such as azure data factory and SSIS to supply the Decision Support database platforms with data from any of the corporation’s OLTP or analytical databases.
  • Hands-on experience using a data visualization tool, such as Power BI and Tableau.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for problem solving and problem identification
  • Attention to detail required
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities at once
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in global environment
  • Ability to operate in a team environment, with excellent interpersonal skills

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS Degree in a field such as Computer Science / Computer Engineering / MIS, or equivalent hands on work history in a technical field
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with Enterprise Database Development such as MS SQL Server and Oracle 10g+.
  • 1+ years of experience with Azure, AWS or other cloud solutions.
  • 3+ years of experience using Stored Procedures.
  • 3+ years of experience creating and modifying SSIS packages.
  • 3+ years of automation experience with business and technology processes.
  • Python programming, Power BI experience as it relates to data engineering is a plus.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Desk job with some visits to the ships as required. While performing job functions the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, write, review and type reports, compile data, operate a PC, communicate, listen, and assess information. The employee may move about the office complex, may travel to other office locations, and may lift, push, pull or move 10 - 15 pounds.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Working in a corporate office environment and sometimes onboard the ships for work, as required. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. The environment includes work inside/outside the office.
