The Royal Caribbean Group’s Safety, Security and Environment Team has an exciting career opportunity for a full time Director, Occupational and Guest Safety reporting to the AVP, Maritime Security.
Position is onsite and is based in Miami, Florida.
Position Summary:
The Director, Occupational and Guest Safety Programs is responsible for the oversight, management, and leadership of the Program under Global Security, consisting of the Project Management, Risk Management, Administration Business Analytics & Continuous Improvement and Digitalization.
The Director, Occupational and Guest Safety Programs is responsible for developing and executing the short- and long-term strategy, planning and financial oversight of all operational and capital aspects related to Occupational and Guest Safety programs. Is executive partner to the RCG brands and Risk management and responsible for ensuring fleet Support for all relevant operational areas, incident/accident response, investigation, and strategic initiatives.
The Director, Occupational and Guest Safety is a representative of Royal Caribbean Group and works at a prominent level acting as a representative of the corporation to third parties (Vendors, Classification Societies, Flag State, Industry Partners etc.) and acts as an advisor to Operations Teams, Newbuild and the RCG brands on matters related to Occupational and Guest Safety.
This position is responsible for promoting and ensuring effective safe operations by developing, managing, improving, and sustaining shipboard safety programs including policy, procedures, design, and oversight for all brands under Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD. Develop, implement, and manage effective occupational and guest safety policies, procedures and initiatives that result in a culture of sustainable and consistent safe work practices for a safe shipboard environment of 100,000 + crew onboard as well as overall reduction of risk exposure to the company. Collaborate with operational leaders to foster a culture of continuous improvement by implementing innovative approaches to reduce injury incidents and advancing corporate sustainability goals. Provide both strategic and tactical direction to all brands on safety matters and initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Direct and drive the development and deployment of safety programs to ensure compliance with company and legislative obligations. Provide direction to executives, senior and line management to ensure safe operations are sustainable with brand objectives. Engage stakeholders in occupational and guest safety to drive statistical and financial improvements.

Direct operational implementation of strategies and initiatives in a way that builds the company safety culture across all operating brands. Build a positive safety culture with the focus on influencing behaviors. Create short- and long-term goals and objectives that promote continuous improvement and innovation.

Monitor all crew and guest safety related activities for effectiveness to move towards zero injury incidents. Communicate to leadership and management the requirements for improving performance including addressing issues, concerns, and corrective actions.

Direct response and aid in emergency situations as needed. Manage technical input for major shipboard incident investigations and review reports. Serve as primary point of contact for external authorities including port state control authorities, flag state authorities and classification society inspectors when required.

Evaluate, monitor, and communicate developments regarding flag state, international legislation, and industry regulations as it relates to safety and make appropriate changes as needed.

Establish KPIs and other performance management tools, monitor, track and report progress.

Direct and develop, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, plans and strategies to meet key performance indicators and other brand safety metrics using data and leading indicators to proactively support and develop occupational and guest safety programs. Evaluate leading and lagging indicators and other data by creating models for decision support to the brands.

Collaborate with other departments across all brands to help shape safety initiatives and decisions.

Continual development of the occupational safety programs onboard, related training and development courses.

Develop implement and maintain occupational and guest safety Business Analytics Strategy, including Performance Management, Process Improvement, and special safety and operational efficiency studies, workshops, and initiatives to further the departments vision of safe, effective, and efficient operations.

Mentor and develop team members, build a robust best in class maritime occupational safety program.

Prioritize projects and day to day operations and utilize department staff in the most efficient way possible.

Liaises with the Safety, Environmental and Health team on all strategic projects, brand integration and execution.

Provide quarterly performance briefing to brand executives related to KPIs.

Improve occupational safety programs by identifying trends and recommending actions to brand management.

Serve on the shoreside safety steering committee providing technical support and effective leadership to create a collaborative consistent and effective team.

Work in conjunction with Risk Management and Global Security to ensure thorough investigations of claims, analysis of potential hazards and development of methods to reduce costs.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) required, MBA preferred

Minimum of 10 years maritime or industrial / public safety experience with background in developing and implementing strategic occupational safety procedures.

Minimum of 5 years in a leadership position implementing and managing safety programs.

Working knowledge and experience with OSHA and international equivalents such as EU-OSHA, as well as new build process and familiarity with shipyard application of such programs.

Experience within Maritime and cruise sectors preferred.

Experience with conducting incidents and accident-related investigations.

Experience with establishing KPIs and performance management

Requires excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels of management, guests, and employees. Ability to present ideas and information in a clear, concise, and organized manner.

Requires excellent writings skills in developing new procedures, SOPs, JSA (job safety analysis) for the company safety management system (SMS).

Requires excellent writing and presentation skills. Ability to work in a shipboard environment as needed.

Requires periodic ship and shipyard visits, for review, training and new program enhancement projects.

Manage budget as directed.

Manage consultant and employee expenses in compliance with company expense policies.

Work with internal departments to reduce injury related claims through improved shipboard crew training, procedures, and prevention tactics
