AVP, Fleet Technical Ops

Support RCL's vision and mission by overseeing the technical operations in the Marine department and the daily operational and financial management of the fleet.  Directly responsible for ensuring that the ships continuously operate in compliance with all company standards, policies and appropriate practices and with the rules and regulations of the appropriate governing authorities and agencies. Manages succession planning, training, evaluation and development for key Marine Operations personnel shipboard and shoreside.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Ensure that ships are operated in compliance with the policies of the corporation and within the rules and regulations of the appropriate governing authorities and agencies with special attention given to safety, security and protection of the environment. Work closely with representatives from various classification societies and governing agencies regulating the operation of our ships.

2. Monitor, oversee and provide support and direction to Managers, Marine Operations, and Directors, Marine Operations for their assigned vessels. This includes operations, maintenance, repair, dry docking, replacement equipment purchases, and overall budget control. 

3. Responsible for the development and management of appropriate performance management metrics and tools, for monitoring the operation

4. Oversees the maintenance strategy and initiatives as well as the planning and scheduling of dry-docks to ensure the proper upkeep of the vessels to meet the company standards.

5. Directs research to develop new or to improve old methods and equipment for shipboard and utilize operational and technical expertise to direct the shipboard and/ or technical teams towards long term, more efficient means of operating our vessels. 

6. Monitor ongoing performance of each ship, maintain frequent communication with senior management onboard (Captain, Staff Captain, Chief Engineer) and provide technical guidance/support through prompt and positive action and feedback.

7. Work closely with the Directors, Marine Operations and Marine HR to select and assign ship Management Teams and evaluate senior shipboard officers.  

8. Represent RCL on damage claims by working closely with both the Underwriter and Insurance Coordinator. Responsible for providing adequate documentation and arranging surveys for the associated claims.

9. Identify and record any problems relating to the product, process, and quality systems in the Marine Operations Department and to ensure Management System compliance on both shipboard and shoreside.

Financial Responsibilities:

Constructs, executes, and manages both short term and long-term financial plans for both shoreside and shipboard budgets. Monitors the external environment and identifies opportunities (both operational and pricing) to fulfill the departments and the companies cost control strategies.   

Qualifications

Background as Naval Architect or Marine/Mechanical Engineer

10-15 years’ experience with a shipping company, classification society or similar. 

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited college or university or the international equivalent preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:

Maintain current knowledge of up-to-date technical research and relevant projects, plus maintain an oversight of new technology for use onboard RCL ships and run test programs on such equipment together with ships personnel.

Professional competence to identify, obtain and create efficiencies through the use of technology, strategy and operational intelligence.

Ability to understand the long term and life cycle planning of the technical systems onboard and make effective use of emerging technologies appropriate to our industry Proven ability to manage the financial aspects of the assigned function, including the successful identification of operating efficiencies.

Manage headcount within the given area.

Manage a staff in a positive and productive manner by motivating, developing and managing employees.

Utilize and administer the disciplinary action process through coaching and counseling to improve performance or terminate employment.

Must have excellent organizational and communication skills.

Prior experience in managerial coaching and team building in a similar environment would be helpful.

The incumbent may be required to travel, frequently and on short notice.

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos.

Ability to communicate effectively with various departments within the organization, both shipboard and shore side.

 Excellent interpersonal skills.  Ability to build, challenge and develop a high caliber team both shoreside and shipboard.

Working knowledge of computers, Internet access, and the ability to navigate within a variety of Microsoft software packages such as Excel and Word.
